GLULAM

Glulam has long been recognized as the product that allows unique and innovative designs to be realized. No other engineered wood product offers the same variety of shapes and versatility as glulam. Western Archrib works closely with architects, engineers, and building designers to provide cost effective solutions to their distinctive and challenging designs.

3D MODELING SOFTWARE

We use a state of the art 3D modeling program developed in Germany specifically for timber construction. A 3D model of the project is created that incorporates all aspects of the structural wood system. From the glulam members and fabricated steel connections, right down to the nuts, bolts, and connecting hardware for the entire system. By modeling the completed system we can ensure that all of the pieces will fit together accurately and nothing gets missed.

CNC FRAMING

Creating an accurate computer model of an engineered wood system, is only the first step. Duplicating that same system for the job site is a challenge that requires the speed and precision of CNC framing. Our 5 axis Hundegger K2 is one of the most sophisticated machines available. This fully automated machine can mill, cut, slot, and drill glulam members for virtually any type of connector or detail required. Our ability to produce components quickly and accurately without measurement, layout, or setup time guarantees our customers a glulam package that matches the project as well as the schedule.

 


 

 

STEEL CONNECTIONS

No structural wood system would be complete without the fabricated steel connections that tie it all together. Western Archrib works closely with each client to provide connectors specifically suited to each project. Because we are involved in the design, detailing and manufacturing of our fabricated steel connections, we can ensure a precise and accurate fit every time.

DESIGN

We specialize in the design of custom fabricated steel connections for our glulam packages. Our engineers carefully consider loading conditions, aesthetics, serviceability and various other aspects of each project prior to designing the connectors. This approach provides our clients with an overall package that is not only attractive but efficient as well.

FABRICATION

A precision cutting and fabricating process, combined with years of experience, produces a finished product with the quality and accuracy you require and expect. From simple connections to complex ones, everything is treated with the same attention to detail.

 


 

 

FINISHES

We can provide glulam and fabricated steel packages with as much or as little shop finishing as the project demands. Our ability to put the finishing touches on the completed package is a service that sets us apart from other manufacturers.

GLULAM FINISHES

We have the experience and the expertise to provide a wide variety of shop applied coatings to the glulam members. From clear finishes that emphasis the natural beauty of wood to semi-transparent stains and even solid colors for both interior and exterior applications.

STEEL FINISHES

Our fabricated steel packages can be provided in various finishes. Prime painted or finish painted are the most common, while hot dip galvanizing and powder coating are also available.

HANDLING & STORAGE

HANDLING

Delivery should be co-ordinated between the manufacturer and the contractor to ensure that the necessary off-loading and lifting equipment is available on-site. Padded or non- marring slings should be used to lift the beams. If slings are unavailable, wire rope may be used, provided the corners of the member are protected with wood blocking. Laminated members should never be dragged or dropped. Climate, amount of shop finishing, and site conditions should all be considered when determining an appropriate time to remove the protective wrapping

 

IMPORTANT: Because of the specific lay-up used to produce glued-laminated timber beams, each member has a specific “TOP” and “BOTTOM” face. It is essential that beams are installed in their correct orientation. To determine the proper faces, peel the wrapping back from one end of the member and locate the manufacturers stamp. This indicates the top of the beam. If in doubt, contact the manufacturers representative for clarification before erection.

 


 

 

STORAGE

Glulam material needs to be stored on-site with the same care as millwork. The best storage plan is to minimize storage altogether. Deliveries can be co-ordinated between the fabricator and the contractor to coincide with erection time lines.

 

If glulam products must be stored, the following guidelines apply:

  • Care must be taken not to rip or otherwise damage the product wrapping. The colour of the product can be adversely affected by direct sun light or exposure to rainwater.
  • Glulam should be stored in a covered area, if this is not possible, a level storage area must be prepared.
  • Beams should be set on supports with a minimum thickness of 6″ (150mm), at an approximate spacing of 10′ (3m) on centre.
  • If beams need to be stacked, they should be separated by spacers with a width of no less than 1 1/2″ (38mm) and spaced at 10′ (3m) on centre.
  • Wrapping should be slit or punctured on the underside to permit the draining of water resulting from condensation or precipitation.
  • All members should be covered with a loosely fitting tarpaulin.

SURFACE CHECKING

One of the major advantages of glulam is its freedom from major checking due to the exclusive use of kiln dried lumber in its fabrication. According to CSA 0122, laminations are glued with a moisture content of 7-15% . This approximates the moisture content in normal use and thereby reduces checking. However, some seasoning checks may occur when members are installed under conditions that require rapid adjustment to a much lower equilibrium moisture content.

 

Rapid changes in moisture content after gluing will result in shrinkage that will develop stresses in both the glued joint and the wood. Differences in the shrinkage rate of the individual laminations tend to concentrate these stresses at or near the glue lines. For this reason, when checking does occur, it is usually adjacent to glue lines. The presence of wood fibre separation in the laminations of checked members indicates that there is adequate glue bond and not delaminating.

PRECAUTIONS TO MINIMIZE CHECKING:

  • Ensure proper storage (see storage guidelines). This will prevent moisture absorption by the members.
  • Consider the environment. Factory applied sealer is applied at a level consistent with normal environments (single coat in side grain surfaces, double coat on end grain surfaces). If the structure is being erected in an area where severe conditions are expected, ordering members double coated is recommended.
  • Once a structure is enclosed, temperature should be increased over several days. In dryweather conditions, air should be humidified and maintained at a low temperature over several weeks to promote gradual drying.
  • Apply finish. The factory sealer is intended as a temporary protective coating. Once the structure is enclosed, and before any excessive heating, one coat of varnish, urethane, or other undercoating should be applied, then followed by the finish coating in accordance with the architect’s finishing schedule.
